Sega's Charles Bellfield addresses the company's plans to develop for the PlayStation and the rumored deal with Acclaim regarding further PS2 game releases.

Sega has confirmed that it will provide content for the Sony PlayStation console, and it has also briefly addressed its rumored agreement with Acclaim to release several of its arcade games on the PlayStation 2. Following Sega of America's announcement this morning, which detailed the company's broad restructuring plans and its intentions to become a third-party software publisher, GameSpot had the opportunity to speak with Charles Bellfield, vice president of marketing and corporate communications at Sega of America.

"Yes, we plan to release content on the PlayStation," Bellfield explained, confirming the company's interests in releasing games for the original PlayStation. "Releasing content that we've either developed for the Genesis platform, or even PS versions of Dreamcast games, is an intention that we are pursuing." In response to the prospects of a deal with Acclaim that will allow the US-based publisher to release several Sega products on the PS2, Bellfield said, "The Acclaim situation with the three titles--Crazy Taxi, Zombie Revenge, and 18-Wheeler: American Pro Trucker--is something that I have commented on. But at this point Acclaim is not making a comment."

After today's monumental announcement that Sega is exiting the hardware market and will cease production of the Dreamcast console on March 31, GameSpot couldn't help but wonder whether the company had any hopes of making a return to hardware manufacturing at some point in the future. Bellfield quickly put those thoughts to rest. "Will Sega make its own hardware product and absorb all the hardware manufacturing costs? No," said Bellfield. "Will Sega work with many companies strategically, as a partner or as a provider of content with different hardware products? Yes, absolutely."
