Smart Communications Inc's HQ Closed Down by Makati LGU

The local government unit (LGU) of Makati City has closed down the headquarters of Smart Communications Inc, for operating without a business permit since 2019, and also for unpaid taxes amounting to Php 3.2 billion. Smart's HQ is located on Ayala Avenue, Barangay San Lorenzo, Makati.

According to a press release posted on Makati City's official Facebook account, the closure order was issued last February due to Smart's violation of Section 4A.01 of the Revised Makati Revenue Code. The examination conducted by the Office of the City Treasurer in 2016 also revealed that Smart owes the city over Php 3.2 billion in unpaid franchise tax from January 2012 to December 2015.

Smart Communications Inc has released a statement in response, stating that their legal and tax teams are in touch with the Makati LGU to address the matter. They emphasized their commitment to complying with Makati City's local tax ordinances and relevant national laws applicable to local taxation.

The closure of Smart's HQ is a reminder to all businesses to ensure that they have the necessary permits and comply with tax obligations.
