Redmi's 300W Fast Charging Solution: Pushing the Boundaries of Battery Charging Technology

Xiaomi sub company, Redmi, has just announced a breakthrough in battery charging technology with a 300W fast-charging solution that promises to fully charge a phone battery in just 5 minutes. In a demonstration video, Redmi showcases a custom 4,100mAh battery in a Redmi Note 12 Discovery phone that gets fully charged in under 5 minutes. While the charging speeds never actually reach 300W, the device is charged at more than 260W for a while, before slowing down to sub-200W.

The charging adapter responsible for this breakthrough is a double-GaN one that keeps its compact size despite its staggering capabilities. Redmi reports that there are more than 50 safety protections in this adapter, but there are concerns about how such fast charging could impact the battery in the long run. Fast-charging is usually associated with heat, which is the biggest enemy to battery chemistry.

While the technology is impressive, Redmi has not announced when we might see phones with this fast-charging capability hit the market.
