Nintendo Confirms: The Switch 2 Dock Won’t Work With Older Models

If you were hoping to plug your old Nintendo Switch into the new Switch 2 dock, we’ve got some news that might disappoint you. Nintendo has officially confirmed that the new dock for the upcoming Switch 2 won’t work with previous versions of the console.

The confirmation comes from Nintendo’s own support pages, as well as their official Japanese site. The message is clear: the original Switch, the Lite version, and even the OLED model won’t be compatible with the Switch 2 dock. So if you were planning to swap out docks between consoles, that won't be possible.

A user from the GBAtemp gaming forum also reached out to Nintendo's customer support in Europe and received a reply that echoed the same thing. The response stated directly that the dock for Switch 2 cannot be used with any of the older Switch consoles.

"Dear customer, Thank you for contacting the Nintendo Contact Center Europe team. We understand from your message that you would like to know if you can use the old Nintendo Switch in the dock of the new Switch 2. The docking station for Switch 2 is not compatible with the Switch console."

But it doesn’t end there. Nintendo has also clarified that the original AC adapter, the one that comes with the older Switch models, won’t work in TV Mode on the Switch 2. It can still charge the new console directly, but if you're planning to play on a bigger screen, you'll need to use the new adapter made specifically for the Switch 2.

There’s also something to note about cables. If you want to get the best picture quality from the Switch 2 when using it in TV Mode, Nintendo recommends using the new Ultra High Speed HDMI cable included with the console. That means older HDMI cables may not give you the full experience.

For long-time Switch users looking to upgrade, it’s a bit of a bummer. Accessories you’ve grown used to may need replacing. Still, with new hardware often come new standards, and Nintendo seems focused on maximizing the performance of the Switch 2.
